USEPA Brownfields Cleanup and Redevelopment Grant

The City of Fostoria and the Fostoria Economic Development Corporation are working together on a USEPA Brownfields Grant application. The grant application is two fold - submit an initial application by December 2002 and, if offered, submit a final application. The USEPA determined that the City's initial application had merit and invited the city to submit a final application by March 19, 2003. The application is available for public inspection in the City of Fostoria Grants Office, 213 S. Main St., 2nd Floor, Fostoria, Oh.

The Ohio Revised Code 122.65 D states a Brownfield is an abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial or commercial property where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by known or potential releases of hazardous substances or petroleum.

The Economic Redevelopment Initiative is to:

o Assess existing sites
o Provide an inventory of sites.
o Categorize sites based on its potential.
o Conduct Environmental assessments of the property.
o Prevent any further contamination.
o Apply for additional funding to clean-up the property.
o Design plans to re-use sites.

The City's Brownfields Task Force selected 12 community wide sites showing the most potential for revitalization. In addition, because of our desire to capitalize on Fostoria's rich train heritage, the majority of sites chosen are located in close proximity to railroads.

Our goals are to
1. Redevelop neglected properties
2. Encourage outside investments in our city and neighborhoods
3. Develop a train museum and visitors center
